An Open Letter to John Thune
The Fate of Our Democracy Rests With You
Dear Majority Leader Thune:
I am hereby demanding on behalf of every law-abiding, democracy-loving, patriotic American that you fulfill your Constitutional responsibilities as the leader of one of the three co-equal branches of the United States government. Let me remind you that you do not work for Donald Trump or the Trump administration. You do not work for MAGA. You work for the American people. And you took an oath to uphold the Constitution and the rule of law. And that’s what we expect you to immediately do.
You have been granted by our founding fathers the power of advise and consent. And our separation of powers clause is among the bedrocks of our democracy. We the American people are counting on you and the Republican-controlled Congress to hold Trump and the executive branch accountable. We expect you to fully exercise your rights and the powers granted to you in the Constitution.
Let's be clear: Donald Trump is not a king. And we are not a monarchy. America was founded through a rebellion against a monarchy. And we are not going back there again. Nor is Trump The Godfather, and America is not the Mafia. Nor is America a dictatorship like North Korea, which is brutally run by a madman and his family.
Suffice it to say, I don’t agree politically with you on policy. I can accept that we differ on immigration, regulation, abortion, gun-reform etc. But I will give you the benefit of the doubt in believing that you love this country as much as I do. That you love our democracy as much as I do. And most of all, that you love our freedom as much as I do.
Which is why you cannot bend the knee and hand over the keys to Trump. You must insist on confirmation hearings and oppose recess appointments. And in those hearings, you must diligently evaluate his cabinet nominations the way you would in deciding to let someone unsavory into your home and around your family. America is our home. And Americans are our family. And we can’t have unqualified, corrupt and dangerous individuals such as Matt Gaetz, Tulsi Gabbard and Pete Hegseth making decisions that greatly affect our lives and the security of our nation both domestically and abroad.
We the American people demand that you not abdicate your oversight responsibility. You must ensure checks and balances on Trump and the executive branch. Because if you capitulate and merely rubber-stamp Trump's self-serving dangerous whims, for all intents and purposes, that will signal the end of our beloved democracy. Donald Trump will be king. And your legacy will be that you handed him the crown.
Make the right choice. For all of us.
